History:
The Ankeny Wrestling Club (AWC) began in 1992 by a small group of volunteers and a handful of young wrestlers, which has grown to over 180 members annually!
The primary goal of the Ankeny Wrestling Club is to help kids learn wrestling skills, have fun, and compete. We are an AAU sanctioned club and our members participate in both AAU and USA sanctioned events.
Many of our champions produced by the Ankeny High School Wrestling program began their career through the wrestling club. We would like to have your child do the same.
Joining the Club:
The Ankeny Wrestling Club is open for kids from 1st grade through 8th grade. We break down the wrestlers into two groups.
- Junior Group: 1st – 3rd grade. This group is tailored for younger, less experienced athletes/wrestlers and we concentrate on movements, skills, technique, and strength under a fun atmosphere.
- Senior Group: 4th – 8th grade. This group is for older, more experienced and competitive wrestlers and is designed to involve a more rigorous workout, accelerated technique, and a higher level of competitive activities.
Practices:
- Wrestlers usually wear a t-shirt, shorts, and wrestling shoes. Headgear is optional.
- Tennis shoes are acceptable if they aren’t used for every day and are clean on the bottoms of the sole.
- No one is allowed in the wrestling room with street shoes on.
- All wrestling shoes must be carried in and out of the building.
- Wrestlers are responsible for their own property. Please keep all valuables at home.
- All wrestlers will be dressed and in the wrestling room ready to practice by 6:00 p.m.
- Parents must come into the building to pick up their child. Children are forbidden to wait outside for their own safety.
Tournaments:
There are numerous tournaments across the state on any given weekend and participation is optional for each wrestler. Tournaments can be found on the links on this website. It is the responsibility of the parent to register, pay, and take their wrestler to the tournament.
